Cosmetic ear reshaping, also known as an otoplasty or pinnaplasty procedure, is a surgical procedure that aims to correct any irregularities in ear shape or size.

He has done an amazing job on two vivid scars I had on my face.
Nikki the Practice Manager is great, a thoroughly professional and welcoming Clinic. I would recommend them to anyone.

The most common procedure is where overly prominent ears are pinned back and this is often performed on children as young as five. Correcting the problem at an earlier age means the child won’t suffer from any of the distress and embarrassment this problem can cause.

Mr. Tariq Ahmad also sees many adult patients seeking treatment for prominent ears. It is possible to reshape and resize the ears and, in particular, the ear lobes. During consultation, Mr Ahmad will take a full medical history and then explain what it is possible to achieve with this procedure. If he feels that your expectations are realistic, an ear reshaping procedure can be a relatively simple with a high rate of patient satisfaction. Ear reconstruction is a topic in its own right and Mr Tariq Ahmad has special expertise in these procedures which he would be happy to discuss with you at a consultation.
What are the benefits of facelift surgery?
A facelift offers several benefits for those seeking to address signs of facial ageing. Benefits include:
- Lift and tighten sagging skin in the mid and lower face
- Soften deep folds and wrinkles, including smile lines and nasolabial folds
- Reduce creases beneath the lower eyelids
- Improve the appearance of jowls along the jawline
- Enhanced muscle tone and reduction of laxity in the midface and chin area
- Reduction of redundant skin and creases in the neck
Who Is a Candidate for Pinnaplasty?
A good candidate for Pinnaplasty is someone who is dissatisfied with the shape, size, or position of their ears and wishes to improve their appearance. Children as young as 5 are often candidates because, by this age, the ears have reached about 90% of their adult size, and the cartilage is developed enough to withstand reshaping. Performing the surgery early can help children avoid the psychological impact of teasing and bullying. However, adults who have not had the opportunity to undergo the procedure as children or those who experience changes in their ear shape later in life are also eligible for the surgery.
Candidates should be in good overall health, with no underlying medical conditions that could impair healing. Smokers are generally advised to quit before surgery, as smoking can impede the body’s ability to recover properly after the procedure.

Surgery
Recovery
Recovery from facelift surgery usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure. In the early days, it is normal to experience swelling, a feeling of tightness and some bruising around the cheeks and jawline. These effects gradually improve over the first couple of weeks.
Throughout your recovery, you will attend scheduled follow-up appointments to closely monitor your progress. A team member will also contact you after your procedure to provide ongoing guidance and address any concerns.
Support continues until healing is complete and you are satisfied with your results. Where appropriate, ancillary treatments such as manual lymphatic drainage or nutrition advice may be provided to optimise the healing process.
Results
You will notice an improvement in your facial contours immediately after surgery, although this early result will be affected by swelling and bruising. These temporary effects are expected and typically resolve over the first 2 to 3 weeks as the healing process progresses.
By around six weeks, the tissues continue to soften and relax. Most patients see their final result between four and six weeks, though subtle refinements can continue for several months as the deeper layers fully settle.
Risks and potential complications of facelift surgery
While facelift surgery is generally safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, the specific risks vary depending on the type of facelift, the extent of the procedure, and your individual health. Potential risks and complications may include:
- Bruising and swelling
- Infection
- Scarring
- Bleeding or haematoma
- Numbness or changes in skin sensation
- Asymmetry or irregularities in contour as tissues heal
- Nerve injury, which is rare but can affect movement or sensation
Mr Ahmad will discuss these risks with you in detail during your consultation so you can make a fully informed decision about your treatment.
pinnaplasty Aftercare
- You will need to sleep upright, well-supported with pillows for 2 weeks following surgery.
- The head bandage needs to remain in place for the amount of time specified by your Consultant, usually 7 to 10 days.
- Take painkillers as directed, these are usually Paracetamol-based. Please avoid taking any Aspirin-based medication as these can cause bleeding. Stitches used are usually absorbable.
- Hair can be washed after removal of the head bandage. Please be careful and gentle around the ear area.
- It is recommended that a protective head band be worn over the ears at night to prevent the ears being bent forward against the pillow for 6 weeks after surgery.
- The ears are often a little numb after the operation and this usually takes several weeks to settle.
- Be careful when taking clothing off over the head not to catch the ears.
- Please refrain from smoking as this prevents good wound healing
- If you are prescribed antibiotics, it is important that you complete the course.
- Avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks (walking and gently stretching is fine).
- Avoid contact sports for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks. It is advisable to wear a protective head band whilst taking part in contact sports in the future.
- Depending of your job, you should be able to return to work/school within 2 weeks after the operation.
- Should you experience undue pain, excessive swelling, redness, hardness, a raised temperature, feel unwell or if your head bandage comes off before the specified length of time it is to be worn, please contact the hospital where you had your procedure, or your Consultant directly if you have been asked to do so.

What Is Pinnaplasty?
The term “Pinnaplasty” refers to “pinna,” which is the external part of the ear, and “plasty,” which means to mould or shape. As such, Pinnaplasty is a procedure focused on reshaping the outer ear to achieve a more natural, symmetrical appearance. The goal is not just aesthetic, but also psychological, as it can help patients, particularly children, feel more comfortable with their appearance, reducing self-consciousness and potential teasing or bullying. Although commonly performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, adults who feel insecure about the shape or position of their ears can also benefit from the surgery.
Reasons for Pinnaplasty
The primary reason people seek Pinnaplasty or otoplasty is to address prominent ears. This condition can occur when the angle between the ear and the head is wider than usual, or when the ear cartilage is overly developed or misshapen. The ears may appear larger or more conspicuous, which can lead to psychological distress, especially in social settings. People with prominent ears may become the subject of teasing or may feel self-conscious about their appearance.
While the correction of prominent ears is the most frequent use of Pinnaplasty, other ear deformities can also be treated through this procedure. For example, congenital issues such as Stahl’s ear (a pointed shape), lop ear (where the tip folds down), or ears with asymmetrical shapes can be effectively addressed. Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty can also correct damage caused by trauma, such as torn cartilage or scars that have altered the ear’s appearance.
How Pinnaplasty Works
During Pinnaplasty, a surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to access the underlying cartilage. Once the cartilage is exposed, the surgeon reshapes or removes sections to create a more natural, proportional look. The surgeon may also place sutures to hold the ears in a new position closer to the head. After reshaping, the incisions are carefully stitched up, leaving a discreet scar that is hidden behind the ear and typically fades over time. The procedure can be performed under either local or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient’s age, comfort level, and the complexity of the surgery. It generally takes between 1.5 to 2 hours, and the patient is usually able to return home the same day.
Recovery and Results
After the surgery, the patient’s head is usually wrapped in bandages to support the ears in their new position and minimise swelling. Patients are advised to wear a headband over their ears at night for several weeks to protect the surgical site while sleeping. Initial swelling and bruising typically subside after a few days to a week, but full recovery may take around six weeks. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week, though strenuous activities, especially contact sports, should be avoided for about a month to prevent injury to the ears.
The results of Pinnaplasty are usually permanent, providing long-term satisfaction for patients. By repositioning the ears closer to the head or reshaping them, the surgery can dramatically improve the balance and proportion of the facial features. The psychological benefits can be significant, boosting self-esteem and confidence.
In summary, Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty, is an effective surgical solution for people seeking to correct prominent ears or other ear deformities. Whether performed on children or adults, the procedure can deliver both aesthetic and emotional benefits. For those who feel self-conscious about their ears, Pinnaplasty offers an opportunity to achieve a more balanced appearance and enhance overall confidence.
