Eyelid Surgery in Cambridge
The delicate skin around the eyes is particularly prone to early ageing. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) rejuvenates the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing excess skin, tightening underlying tissues and refining the delicate contours around the eyes.

What is eyelid surgery?
As one gets older, the delicate skin around the eyes is often one of the first areas to show noticeable changes. Skin may lose elasticity, muscles can weaken, and the fat around the eyes may shift or become more prominent.
These changes can result in hooded upper eyelids, puffiness or bags beneath the eyes, hollowing, or folds that create a tired or heavy appearance. In some cases, excess upper eyelid skin can even begin to obscure vision.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to address these visible changes in the upper and/or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can involve the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both.
Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin from the upper eyelid and may involve repositioning or removing fat to restore a smoother, more defined eyelid crease.
Lower eyelid surgery can refine puffiness or hollowing beneath the eyes by repositioning or removing fat and tightening or smoothing the skin.
While eyelid surgery focuses specifically on rejuvenating the upper and lower eyelids, many patients choose to combine it with procedures such as a facelift.
What are the benefits of
eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery offers several benefits for individuals, including:
- Reducing excess skin on the upper eyelids which can reduce heaviness and, in some cases, enhance vision
- Improving under-eye bags or bulging caused by displaced or prominent fat
- Addressing hollowing beneath the eyes upper eyelid definition
- Enhancing upper eyelid definition
- Creating a brighter and more refreshed appearance
Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery if you are noticing changes such as excess skin on the upper eyelids, under-eye bags, puffiness, hollowing, or a generally tired appearance around the eyes. Some individuals also consider eyelid surgery when excess upper eyelid skin begins to interfere with their vision.
Ideal candidates are in good general health, do not smoke (or are willing to stop smoking before and after surgery), and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.
A detailed consultation with Mr Ahmad will determine whether eyelid surgery is appropriate.

What to expect during eyelid surgery?
From your first enquiry to full recovery, we’re with you every step of the way.
Consultation
During your consultation with Mr Ahmad, he will take the time to understand your concerns, assess both the upper and lower eyelids, and discuss the changes you hope to achieve. This detailed evaluation allows him to tailor a treatment plan specifically to your anatomy, goals and expectations.
You will receive clear information about the different approaches to upper and lower blepharoplasty and how each may address your individual concerns. A second complimentary consultation is offered after you have had time to reflect on the information provided, giving you the opportunity to revisit any questions and review the information presented before deciding whether to proceed.
Surgery
Before your operation, you will attend pre-admission appointments to ensure you are fully prepared for surgery. All eyelid procedures are performed personally by Mr Ahmad.
Eyelid surgery can be carried out under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic, depending on the technique used and whether the upper, lower or both eyelids are being treated. The procedure typically takes around 2–3 hours.
Upper eyelid surgery:
An incision is made along the natural eyelid crease to ensure a discreet scar. Excess skin and any prominent fat are carefully removed, and adjustments to the underlying muscle may be made to refine the eyelid contour. The incision is then closed with fine stitches.
Lower eyelid surgery:
The incision may be placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (a transconjunctival approach), depending on your needs. Excess skin and fat are removed or repositioned, and the muscle may be tightened if necessary. Mr Ahmad is meticulous in avoiding the removal of too much fat to ensure a smooth, natural appearance rather than a hollowed look.
Recovery
Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes around 2 weeks (lower eyelid surgery might take up to 3 weeks), depending on whether both the upper and lower eyelids were treated.
- Upper eyelid surgery is often performed as a day case, allowing you to go home the same day.
- Lower eyelid surgery may require an overnight hospital stay, depending on the extent of the procedure.
In the early days, it is normal to experience swelling, mild bruising, a feeling of tightness around the eyes, dryness or irritation, and temporary blurred vision due to swelling or ointment. These effects typically improve significantly within the first week.
You will attend follow-up appointments so your healing can be closely monitored, and a member of the team will contact you after surgery to check on your progress, answer any questions, and provide guidance. Support continues until healing is complete and you are satisfied with your results.
Results
Initial improvements are visible soon after surgery, although swelling and bruising may temporarily obscure the final result. Over the following two to three weeks, these early effects settle, and the eyes begin to appear brighter and more refreshed. The final result typically develops over several months as the tissues heal and the eyelid contours refine fully.
Risks and potential complications of eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is generally safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon; however, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications to be aware of. These include:
- Bruising and swelling
- Dryness, irritation or watering of the eyes
- Temporary blurred vision
- Infection
- Bleeding or haematoma
- Changes in skin sensation
Mr Ahmad will explain these risks in detail to you during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about eyelid surgery. For more specific enquiries, please contact us.
How long does blepharoplasty last?
The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting. Improvements to the upper eyelids typically remain for 7–10 years, while improvements to the lower eyelid often persist even longer.
Is blepharoplasty safe?
Blepharoplasty is considered a safe and reliable procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. As with any operation, risks do exist, but these are uncommon and will be discussed comprehensively with you during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.
Does blepharoplasty hurt?
Most patients report only mild discomfort following eyelid surgery. Sensations such as tightness, light irritation, or temporary dryness are common in the early postoperative period, but these typically resolve quickly and can be effectively managed with prescribed medication and cold compresses.
Is blepharoplasty permanent?
The improvements achieved through blepharoplasty are long-lasting but not permanent. Once excess skin and fat are removed, they do not return. However, the eyes will continue to age naturally, and some patients may notice gradual changes over time. That said, most patients maintain a noticeably refreshed appearance for many years following surgery.
How long does blepharoplasty surgery take?
Eyelid surgery usually takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on whether the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both are treated. The specific surgical techniques required to achieve the desired outcome also influence the overall duration.
Is blepharoplasty worth it?
For many individuals, blepharoplasty provides a meaningful improvement in both appearance and confidence. It can significantly reduce heaviness or hooding of the upper eyelids, minimise under-eye bags and puffiness, and restore a more alert, rested look. When excess skin affects vision, the procedure may also enhance functional sight.
How long is eyelid surgery recovery?
Most patients recover within 10 to 14 days, with swelling and bruising settling progressively throughout this period. Upper eyelid surgery is commonly performed as a day case, whereas lower eyelid surgery may require an overnight stay. Most individuals feel comfortable resuming everyday activities after two weeks, with subtle refinement continuing for several months.
What does eyelid surgery do?
Eyelid surgery rejuvenates the eye area by removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle and fat in the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure improves hooding, puffiness, under-eye bags and hollowing, resulting in a smoother, more defined and naturally refreshed appearance while preserving the eye’s inherent shape and expression.
How soon after surgery can I attend a special event or go on holiday?
We generally recommend allowing at least six weeks between your procedure and any important event, such as a wedding, special celebration, or planned holiday. This gives your body sufficient time to heal and allows swelling or bruising to settle, so you can feel confident and comfortable.
If you are planning to travel, particularly long-haul or overseas, we also advise waiting a minimum of six weeks before flying. This helps ensure a smooth recovery and reduces the chance of travel disruption should you require any additional post-operative care. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate timing for your procedure during your consultation to help you plan ahead with confidence.
