Nowadays, due to many factors influencing our daily lives, we focus more on how we look and how we feel about ourselves. People of all age groups are actively seeking to improve their health, appearance and body which is where plastic surgery steps in to help achieve this and delay the ageing process. It is often said and predicted, that in the future this desire to look young and attractive may become even more commonplace as people work and live longer. Plastic surgery is not really one of those “one and done” type of situations. Just as trends come and go in everything in our society from fashion to technology, there are also the latest trends in plastic surgery for doctors and patients alike.
There are some plastic surgeries trends that can be predicted to continue in their popularity no matter the trends such as liposuction procedures as obesity and overweight levels are also steadily increasing. However, there are also trends that come and go due to a variety of factors and trends. So let’s have a look at 4 of the most popular procedures nowadays.
1. Stem cells
Stem cell technology is a new and exciting concept for plastic surgeons and patients alike. Stem cells can be harvested to regenerate cells and tissues in the human body which may well mean that in the not so distant future, stem cell technologies may be combined with tissue engineering to grow new body parts as required. Stem cells could also potentially be re-injected into areas as a filler that is more compatible and longer lasting than current fillers.
Areas where research is currently being undertaken include:
• burn care – generation of the dermal (innermost skin) layer following burn injury.
• breast reconstruction – regeneration of new tissue layers over implants in breast cancer survivors.
• nerve regeneration – regeneration of nerves and restoration of optimal function after nerve injury.
• wound care – use of skin substitutes (composed of living cells grown in a laboratory) to heal wounds.
• scar treatment to improve the healing of scars.
• hand and face transplantation.
2. End of Medical Tourism
It has been a couple of years with many negative cases been reported in media of plastic surgeries abroad gone bad (or botched jobs as they tend to be called). In reality, the public is becoming more and more aware of such rogue practices which is already slowly putting an end to the concept of Medical tourism. What in the past was considered attractive as a low-cost alternative to pricey elective procedures now has patients reconsidering its value, monetarily and otherwise.
3. Injectables/Fillers
Possibly the trend of the decade, Botox and fillers have taken the UK by storm. Injectables, lasers, and skin resurfacing can be quick – often even squeezed into a lunchtime break – often with immediately visible effects and limited downtime, factors that have significantly contributes to their “wide acceptance” as well as confidentiality. Of course shows on TV such as Love Island where contestants tend to make use of such treatments has also been a motivating factor.
4. Breast Augmentation
One of the latest and most prevalent plastic surgery trends for 2019 is high tech “hybrid” breast augmentation. This new type of breast augmentation which combines implants with reshaping possibilities offered by fat transfer is much preferred to classic silicone breast implants as it offers fewer risks and a shorter recovery time.
