Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid, in 1936 in Paris for the treatment of swollen lymph nodes. It plays a critical role in managing lymphatic diseases, particularly lymphedema, which is a significant health concern.
Technique: MLD is a gentle, skin-stretching massage aimed at promoting the movement of lymphatic fluid out of swollen areas. It focuses on the lymph vessels to facilitate lymph flow. Unlike traditional massages, MLD targets the lymphatic system specifically. The therapy begins with application to unaffected areas to enable fluid movement out of the congested regions. This helps open functional lymph collectors and accelerates lymph fluid flow through the lymphatics.
