About Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Miss O’Leary

Miss O’Leary is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a Specialist interest in Skin Oncology at Cambridge University Hospital. Both her parents are hospital doctors which allowed her unlimited early access to their old medical school books, where gruesome photos piqued her interest in surgery.

As a doctor she spent 15 years training in prestigious hospitals in the UK, USA and Ireland in Plastic Surgery and affiliated specialties prior to taking up a consultant post, and has over 2 decades of clinical experience.

Education

Miss O’Leary attended Secondary school at the Loreto Convent Secondary School in Clonmel, a market town in Southern Ireland. She gained A* grades in 6 subjects in 1998 and read medicine at University College Cork, Ireland. She qualified with honours as a doctor in 2003.

Surgical Training

Following completion of house officer and core surgical training in Cork in Plastic Surgery and General Surgery, along with being awarded her MRCS degree, she undertook a 2 year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Boston Massachusetts, in Burns and Trauma Immunology. She has published a number of publications in peer reviewed journals, presented over 20 international presentations and was awarded several prizes for this research in addition to being awarded an MD in Surgery. Following a move to the United Kingdom, she worked in a number of plastic surgery units including Frenchay Bristol, Stoke Mandeville and Royal Devon and Exeter, prior to being appointed to Higher Surgical Training in East of England, rotating through Stevenage, Norwich, Chelmsford and Cambridge. Following completion of this and being awarded the FRCS PLAST, she did national fellowships in Skin Oncology at Norwich, Reconstructive medical aesthetics at Royal Surrey Hospital and the London Clinic, finishing up with a microsurgical fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. She is on the UK Specialist Register of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. She was appointed as a full time Consultant to Addenbrookes in 2018, and her main areas of practice are all aspects of skin oncology diagnosis, treatment and reconstruction, soft tissue mass assessment and management, trauma surgery and flap reconstruction with advanced pelvic malignancy.

She is a member of the Melanoma Focus Society, and fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Outside Interests of Miss O’Leary

Outside of work Miss O’Leary loves spending time with her family and pets. She enjoys cookery, reading, studying languages and horse riding.
