Skin cysts can be of varying origin and type but in essence are lumps filled with fluid or soft material; they can be in the skin or just underneath. Most skin cysts are very common and not harmful, some do slowly disappear without treatment; others do not. Skin lumps can be a number of things such as Lipomas which are lumps of fat.

Cysts and skin lumps really need to be assessed clinically, that is to say in person as it can be difficult to discern whether the lump is a cyst or something else that might need treatment, and so a full consultation is advised. Some skin cysts can be treated by the so called ‘evagination’ technique. This is a specialised plastic surgical procedure where the cyst is not removed whole which would otherwise necessitate a wound, and so scar, that is long enough to bring the cyst out. With the evagination technique, the cyst is first emptied with a much smaller incision and then taken out by being pulled out from within, in a fashion a little similar to turning the lining of the cyst inside out. This can result in a much smaller scar.

Some skin lumps need to be removed whole and very carefully, with meticulous technique to obtain the finest scar possible.
